Capturing Life

Throughout my five weeks of travel I noticed a(n awful) trend--I was always trying to perfectly capture a scene. It didn't matter whether it was a person, place, or thing; my image needed to be flawless. This lead to waiting obnoxious lengths of time for people to clear out of the way, using special settings to satisfy the weather, taking a picture 19 times until everyone was appeased with the way they looked, or in the case of an animal shooting over a hundred pictures to acquire him/her at the best angle.

The end result. Looking back on all my pictures there are only about nine that truly love. This fact and my perfectionist nature kind of disgust me. Apart from this blog my pictures are not posted all over the web. I am not out to prove anything through photos. I have a terrible, horrible, no good memory so my images are meant to visually record created memories.

And honestly, how dumb does it sound to say life is not perfect? In case your wondering, that's rhetorical.

This being said, camera phone in hand--I am off to shoot daily life in July. I am going to take a picture everyday of something real in my life. No retakes, no adjusting. I want raw images of what is going on in my life in that moment. It's so easy to edit and wait for the next best thing, but when that happens we miss what is right in front of our face. July 2011 is not getting away from me. May this be the new trend...
